What are RECs?

The Federal Government’s rebate scheme for solar panels has been replaced by the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target scheme. Under this scheme, energy providers are required by law to obtain a set proportion of their electricity from renewable energy sources.

How does this fit in with your new solar panels? Well, the way that the energy providers achieve their renewable energy quota is by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). A newly installed solar panel generation system is eligible for RECs which can then be traded with the energy provider. The number of RECs you are entitled to is determined by the size of the unit and the location in which is it installed. The value of the RECs is determined by supply and demand, much like stock in the stock market.

We are a registered agent for the selling of RECs. While you are entitled to register and sell these RECs yourself, many people choose to assign their RECs in exchange for an upfront discount on their system.

Net Metering

You may have heard of the terms net metering or gross metering but what does that mean?

In a net metering arrangement you get paid for surplus electricity that your system produces, that is, the amount of electricity that you produce over and above what your residence uses. At present, this is the arrangement available in Queensland, under the solar bonus scheme. Under the net metering arrangement you will get paid around $0.44 per kilowatt hour produced (or slightly more depending on which retailer you are with).

In a gross metering arrangement you get paid for every kilowatt hour your system produces, regardless of whether you use the electricity yourself or return it to the grid. At present this option is not available in Queensland.
